You may be thinking to yourself “Who would create a web page to help others get rid of head lice?” Well, that would be me.
Who am I?
I am a married father of three children ages 6 (daughter), 8 (daughter), and 10 (son) years of age. I stay at home cooking three meals a day, take care of household repairs, build electronic contraptions and gizmos, and generally do everything a stay at home dad does on a daily basis. I dabble in anything techie, and like to help others as it helps me break up the monotony of being at home with the kids for long periods of time without adult interaction.
what was your head lice story?
The summer of 2019 was an incredibly busy time traveling to LA (visit the parents and Knott’s Berry Farm), Mount Shasta, and Vegas. Kids went to camp while my wife and I spent a weekend in Vegas trying to catch up on some time to ourselves. Little did we know that during the week our kids spent at camp (with around 200 kids), they would get head lice.
Fast forward a month, we realized our girls were increasingly complaining about an itchy head and back of the neck, I thought it was an allergic reaction to something they ate. My wife also said she noticed her head and back of her head becoming itchy as well. It wasn’t until one of our girls sat on my wife’s lap to read a book did my wife notice something moving in our daughters hair. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was not one, but several little bugs crawling around. *wife freak out ensues* We didn’t know what it was at the time (this was and is still the only experience we’ve had with head lice). But a quick google search showed it was head lice.
The learning game
After a few days of trying to get rid of our daughters head lice, I realized something very strange about the treatments and remedies we were using (all found off the internet), they just did not work.
I didn’t understand it, these over the counter pesticides like Nix and Rid should be killing the head lice, however every time we checked, there were still live lice moving around! We tried Nix, soaking their hair in mineral oil, hair dryers, and fancy stainless steel nit combs, and all of them still left some live lice. We became experts at sectioning hair, inspecting, and picking out nits, but ultimately, they would always come back.
I learned a ton…of what not to do, what does not work, and what does work over the entire lice infestation treatment ordeal.
Why did I create a website on how to remove head lice?
Due to the fact that effective and reliable lice removal information was time consuming and difficult to find on the internet, coupled with the fact that we were already pressed for time (school started the same week!), a well thought out plan for treating the little head lice pests was not followed (which would have saved us tons of frustration, money, and time wasted). We were flying by the seat of our pants!
It’s because of that stressful experience which lead me to create this web site. I feel for all the millions of people who will, or have had to deal with a head lice problem on themselves or someone they love without access to consolidated, quality, information.
I hope this website helps you to return to a normal life, and makes the problem of getting rid of head lice a tiny bump in the road instead of a mountain to climb.
